Broke Back Mountain is definitely a very sentimental and endearing movie with an unconventional pace that flows naturally without too much rapports and noises, its really the relaxed pace of the Country side. Enjoying Lee Ann's sentimental shots for all the beautiful sceneries showing off the nice Rockies, great outdoors with woods and horses, its like a vacation getaway! No rush!
The movie reminded me of two of Hong Kong's movie guru 王家衛Wong Kar Wai's movies:
1) Happy Together 春光作洩 (starring Leslie Cheung 張國榮 & Tony Leung梁朝偉)
2) 花樣年華 (starring Tony Leung梁朝偉 & Maggie Cheung 張曼玉)
These two movies gained awards in Cannes Festival. Both movies promoted both homosexuality and affairs as corrupt, filthy, and dissolute relationships
As comparted to both movies, Broke Back Mountain consolidated the two issues, but projected a cleaner, non-obsene, spiritual love story which was forbidden by existing social values and morale in U.S. during the 70's. Somehow the fate of the unfaithful partner was punished for his betrayal. There's not much violence, explicit sex to disgrace the movie. I appreciate greatly how Lee Ann handled homosexual relationships with noble respect and non-discriminating in nature.
However, as mentioned in previous article, I am not very romantic, thus I prefer Crash to Broke Back Mountain! I think the latter movie was so hot because its talking about "forbidden" relationships with additional spice of Gay romance! Enjoy!
